Time

How time flies when you are doing absolutely nothing. I am like literally doing nothing of true importance. Sure I'm catching up on shows that I have taped but no time to watch, but other than that NOTHING. This is my week to be lazy before heading back to work Monday night (eerr). Ok, don't get me wrong I like my job to an extent just like other people, but for now it works for me except for working nights, but again you could not pay me enough to go to day shift at this place....more work less money. I work nights so I get a shift differential (more money), but it can be difficult at times because of certain situations that my facility puts us night crew through. I am not going to mention anything specific but it is not a pretty sight on a lot of nights.

My crew works pretty well together though some have a different opinion of being saved and going to heaven than I do. I have a couple of workers that think just because they do good deeds they are ok. I have another who thinks and has even stated to me 'God and I have a deal He does His thing and I do mine'...what kind of thinking is that. I have a lot of witnessing opportunities with those three, but they have their minds set. I can tell you that on my last night before I took this vacation I was attempting to explain that not all movies are appropriate to see and if you do watch them be careful with the humor. I am even careful with movie titles....if the movie title is a bit ify ( I know that is not a word but I like it) the movie will be to.

Speaking of movies.. the movie Boogie Nights can sound harmless, but be careful. When Boogie Nights first came out I went with a guy to see it and I just wanted to crawl under my chair. I remember thinking "How can I slip out of here and call a taxi to take me back to my apartment?". The guy "apologized" for the kind of movie it was but I did not take his apology seriously and that is why the word is in quotes. How can a guy apologize and say that we could have left when he was sitting there laughing at the movie? My coworkers keep talking about "American Pie- The Naked Mile"... I have to admit that I never saw the movie but two things "American Pie" and the word "Naked". I have to admit that I do own the first three American Pies but I believe that after those you really need to be careful 1) because of titles (again) American Pie (the 1st) mentions about "band camp" the fourth American Pie is titled "Band Camp" if you've seen the first you can guess what that movie is about and 2) again the title for the 5th "The Naked Mile" think about that one.... what could it be about? It seems my coworkers have a thing about some of the most obnoxious movies that should never have been made, but hey Hollywood does not know how to make decent movies anymore. I know this is not the 1950's but we need to have some decency and not be showing everything..... what happened to our imaginations?

6

My nephew Riley wiil be 6 years old tomorrow. I cannot believe how much he has grown. I remember going with my brother to bring Riley home from the hospital along with my sister-in-law. Riley has fit into this family well (he's adopted) and naturally he should. My brother and sister-in-law got him right when he was born..they were even in the delivery room. Riley's story maybe a bit unusual to some. My brother and his wife had not even been discussing anything about adoption (see originally I think my brother didn't want kids) and one day out of the blue my brother received a phone call from someone he knew who knew someone who was expecting and could not keep the baby. My brother discussed it and like 3-4 months later Riley was in our lives. Oh he has jestures that scream my brother and we even took a picture of him standing just the way my dad use to.....we even had him dressed like my dad (there's the pic even). How time flies by. I cannot believe he will be graduating from kindergarten.

2 Years

That is my dad, Duane. Actually, Duane is his middle name, but that is not the point. The point is this...I cannot believe that it has been 2 years since dad passed away. He passed away on March 17, 2005 and I was there when it happened. Actually, all of us was there except for one of my brothers who had said his goodbye the day before. You are probably thinking "what? said his goodbye the day before?" Yes, we knew the time was upon us to say goodbye.

My dad had been ill for a month and had been on a ventilator for just as long. Dad went into the hospital Feb. 15 (his and mom's anniversary (42nd)) with his usual pneumonia from his years of smoking. I went to visit him the next day and things already looked on the up and up. Dad had said that he was told he would be allowed to go home that Friday Feb 18. (Amazing that I can remember such dates isn't it) Dad had shaved and was sitting on the edge of the bed, all good signs right?

I'll jump ahead now.

The quote un quote day that dad was to have come home he was back in the ICU and was getting ready to be transferred to St. E hospital. I was in class (for nursing) when this was transpiring. I get the voice mail after class and find out what is going on. Now, I'm scared and shaking and having the worst possible thoughts going through my head. I remember sitting in the mall parking lot for a while then sitting at the parking garage at the hospital. I went in to the room I knew was going to be his and was met by the EMT. I was told that dad could not possibly go on breathing the way that he was. I understood and had just about prepared myself for this day for about 2 years, see my dad just about died 2 years earlier from the same thing. I walked into my dad's room and my dad was just not himself. My dad was questioning about his oxygen "Is there enough?" I had to explain to my dad where he was and that there is indeed enough oxygen because he was hooked up to the hospitals big tank. I seemed to have settled him down with that. I had to fill out his health history (like I really knew everything), but I did my best. My family finally showed up so I was no longer alone. My dad was placed on a Bi-Pap machine (it forces air) and that just completely flipped my dad out. I warned his nurse that he was trying to remove it, but I don't think she believed me until it actually happened. Now we have the nurse and the respiratory team in with dad and they are rushing him to CCU (why he was not there in the first place is beyond me). The family was ushered past dad's door to the waiting room. We waited there for what seemed like an eternity, but I think might have been 45 minutes. During this time the hospital Chaplin was trying to find out information for us, but was not succeeding like we wanted. Finally, his nurse came. We were told that there had been 3 crisis with my dad.

Nothing could prepare me for what I saw next.

I walked into my dad's room and he was laying flat with a ventilator tube going down his throat, a feeding tube down his nose some sort of band around his head (which I later discovered was taking his oxygen reading). My dad looked dead. After awhile, my dad started moving around quite a bit and was wanting to sit up; however, the nurse said that he could not because he had an a-line (which is an internal blood pressure monitor (suppose to be the most accurate)). All of us pretty much stayed at the hospital that night because the next 24 hours were going to be critical.

Now, I am in nursing school during this time an pretty much my instructors were nice to me about my situation. I would stop by the hospital on my way to class and after class for reasons like to drop mom off and pick her up, to see my dad and continue to tell him what I was learning that day or what happened in my clinical just like I did prior to this ordeal.

I don't think we really ever got a straight answer from the doctor about what was going on with my dad. I mean one day he has air movement in his lungs and he has 75% chance of coming out of it and the next he had no movement and a chance of coming out of it. We were told that dad would need a tracheotomy to lesson a chance of infection and I believe to help with the ventilator. I was outside the door when that was going on.

The day after dad got his tracheotomy dad was sent to Carmel to a hospital there that could help dad wean off the ventilator. I went to Carmel that day with my mom and one of my brothers. I have to say that the nurses at SEAS of Carmel are very caring. I would fill them in on my dad's quirks (likes and dislikes). They would tell me what kind of day he was having and I felt at ease asking questions.

I'm really going to skip ahead now.

The day that dad passed was hard. I became forceful with the doctor, because he was trying to change the time he was to meet with us. I finally won. My mom had to sign papers to take dad off the ventilator. I remember one of his sisters was even there, and I held his hand as I watched the monitor and cried out when it was over. I tried closing his eyes, but could not. My dad drove a school bus and he died at the time he was to have been picking up the kids from school (his death certificate has a different time, but we looked at the clock).

My dad's bus number got retired the next day.

My dad is the reason why I went to school to be a nurse. I just finally gave in to him getting after me for 5 years. My dad did not physically see me graduate and get my license...he was there though. I don't know if you can truly see the picture on my gown (sorry about the bad picture of me), but that is the picture that is at the beginning of my blog of my dad. I was asked I believe by the chancellor who the picture was of and I said that it was my dad.

That's it. Well, most of it. I left a lot out too hard to handle. I found it hard just typing what I did. I stopped by the cemetary on my way home and just stared at the headstone and could not believe that it has been 2 years.

Difficult

Though I have tonight off I am so not looking forward to going to work tomorrow night.

I find it difficult to go back to work after having 2-3 days (nights) off in a row, but what is even worse is when you have one night off and then have to head back in. Next week will be a (blank) week due to work messed up my schedule. I like to clump together my work days like work 2 off 2-3, but next week they have me working one day off a day work a day off a day. I get no rest when this happens and normally I would have complained but the next week they went ahead and gave me vacation time that I had requested for back in January, but now I have decided not to go anywhere. So yea a week off from work!!!!

Perchance to sleep

Last night was Ministry Options Night at church so we had Bible study at the Moore's. We went over Psalm 57 which had insight that no matter what is going on the Lord is in control. We have a sovereign and merciful Lord we are to have faith and trust in Him. I have times that I wonder how much I trust Him and times that I deal with the power struggle of control (I dig in my heels and fight, but ultimately He wins).

Dessert was also so served by Melissa M. and Lee. Both were equally as good as I told Lee that I normally do not eat pumpkin I was shocked at how good it was. I also enjoyed Melissa's lemon dessert. I cannot remember the name of it; however I heard references floating throughout the kitchen as 'Lemon Gravy' you'll have to read her post.

Of course, it could not have been completed without the "Mission Impossible" game players chasing each other (well a few of them) to tag them with stickers to take each other out of the game. I know of at least two people that were tagged and one of them (Melissa) purposely announced that she was willing to be tagged. Ha Dana T. took her up and that and stepped out the door with Mel and tagged her. Jeannie earlier had been wildly chased around the yard by Chris G. as she was attempting to get to her car, but wouldn't you know it Lee stepped in and was chasing Chris so does that mean Lee has Chris or was he merely helping out Jeannie?

I don't remember what time I left the Moore's, but I do remember getting home probably a little after 9pm. I had a few things to do and finally realized that all I had eaten that evening was dessert, which is not bad, but I needed a little more. I will not go into details of what I ate, but time all was said and done it was midnight (new time). Now that I have trouble sleeping my doctor decided to give me samples of some sleeping pills. I had run out of the king he had given me and recently stopped by his office for some more samples. This doctor did not write down what strength he had given me and the nurse gave me what was available. Well, now it is a totally different strength twice the amount. I don't know why I did not cut the thing in half, but lets say I have learned my lesson. I took it like maybe at 12:30 alseep by 1am slept until 11am, but feeling like a hangover (never had one, but if this is what it feels like why ever get one). I made it to the couch where I about fell asleep again, but thought maybe a shower would perk me up. No such luck. I feel asleep again only to wake up I think at 3pm. I slept my day off away. I also bet it was one of the nicest days that we are going to have for awhile.

Yeah, I think the next time either make sure I'm given the right strength or cut the thing in half.

What Superhero Are You?

You Are Batman
Billionaire playboy by day. Saving the world by night.
And you're not even a true superhero. Just someone with a lot of expensive toys!
What Superhero Are You?
Ok, I am not sure if I am Batman, but if the cape fits. I hope Batman was not being put down here saying that he is not a true superhero. What makes a true superhero?

Am I getting this figured out yet?

Though no one held a gun to my head and said "Start a blog" I heard several people in the Career Class making comments about blogs. I have to admit I am not as computer savvy as some and my blog may not be as interesting as the others, but hey why not make a blog. I do realize that this is my third post, but better late than never to admit that. To some and probably me included if I really wanted to admit it a blog is more or less an online diary that someone else can come along and read. I know that some use it as a way to invite people to do things instead of using a mass e-mail.

As you can clearly see my blog is pretty much generic. I could not even come up with a cool name for it. I mean why "My Originals"? I actually did come up with some cool names; however, they were already used. I did come up with one cool title, but figured that it would take too long to type in and I wondered how others would take it. Some people would not care how others took things, but I am one who tries to think ahead and visualize what others might say or think of something that I do or say.

Why Psalm 23 under the "About Me"? I like that passage from the Bible. The Lord is my shepherd and I shall follow Him. I find strength that I need from this passage. The whole Bible is full of places to find strength, but Psalm 23 is where I turn to a lot.

I am still locating a decent and recent picture of me to use on this post. Of course, once I find this infamous picture I will have the pleasure of trying to figure out how to post it....remember I am not all that computer savvy. I just figured out how to post a tag line onto the title of my blog. (I know that is not very original either.)

Say What?!

On Tuesday I had blood drawn because my doctor reminded me that it has been 2 years since my last blood work. I do the thing you know no eating after midnight or else you have to reschedule. I got poked twice because come to find out my left arm is not as good as my right for getting blood. I have a small bruise, but nothing like what happened to me maybe 7 years ago, but why digress to that time period though I must say I am still upset with that nurse.

Wednesday I got the sometimes dreadful phone call from the doctor's office with my results. The nurse on the other end of the line said that everything was fine; however, my blood sugar was high. At this point I am thinking to myself "high? I checked it myself before going to the doctor and it was fine and now I'm being told that it was high." The nurse went on to say that it was 104 (now wait a minute when did that become high?) she explained what "normal" is which apparently to this doctor is anything lower than 100. (I wonder what he would say if he saw the blood sugars that I see on a daily basis at my facility.) I was then told what to watch (like I'm going to give up chocolate-my best friend no way).
I hung up the phone with a sigh and looked to "my best friend" and laughed "what a quack" as I ate that piece of chocolate.

I wonder "Do you think those 3 Carmel Delight Girl Scout cookies at 11:59pm had anything to do with it?" Nah
